William B. Grant, Ph.D.

William B. Grant has a Ph.D. in physics and had a 30-year career developing and applying laser systems for the remote measurement of atmospheric constituents. He has spent the past 12 years investigating risk-modifying factors for chronic and infectious diseases using the ecological approach. He retired from NASA in 2002 and founded Sunlight, Nutrition, and Health Research Center (SUNARC) to extend his health research.  His primary research interest is the beneficial role of vitamin D in reducing the risk of chronic and infectious diseases.  His notable findings include the first paper identifying diet as being important in modifying the risk of Alzheimer's disease, identifying about ten types of cancer for which solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiance and vitamin D reduce the risk, and determining that solar UVB and vitamin D reduce the risk of death from bacterial pneumonia during pandemic influenza.
